Inspiration
Watching
Watching all of Stanley Kubrick’s Filmography after reading accompanying interviews about each film. He’s my favorite director of all time and I’ve never done a deep dive on his work, life and process.
Fargo - I'd put this show in my top 5 of all time - it's superb. Do yourself a favor and watch Season 2 first, because it's actually a prequel to Season 1 and my favorite of the series. The acting, art direction, cinematography, soundtrack, dialogue, etc. is just so good.
Sarah C. M. Paine - She’s an amazing scholar of political and military history, especially for Russia, China and Europe. This interview was one of the best I’ve ever seen on the subject.
Reading
RN - Richard Nixon's Autobiography - I enjoy reading about people in power during critical junctions in history, but only after they've had time to be digested by history. Love or hate him, he was probably one of the most intelligent Presidents the US ever had and it comes across in his writing and assessments of world events. His downfall was his willingness to do anything to win (Watergrate) after having lost so many times during his life. He's the bullied kid who becomes a bully himself.
The Brothers - Similar to Nixon, I don’t know much about the Dulles brothers, who had a major hand in shaping the US and foreign policy from the 1920’s to the 70’s.
The Sutra of Hui-Neng - An illiterate woodcutter who attained Zen enlightenment in a flash, he became the Sixth Patriarch of Chinese Zen, and is regarded as the founder of the "Sudden Enlightenment" school.
Writers at Work Series by The Paris Review - They sat down for lengthy interviews with the 20th century’s titans of literature. It’s so fascinating to read about the details of their life, work and psyche.
Listening
Rick Rubin's Tetragrammaton podcast - The interviews are deep, insightful and peel back the curtain on people - which I live for.
The Howard Stern Shows from 2010 - This is the last year of the “golden era”, as far as I’m concerned. I’ve been a near-daily listener since I was 13 years old and it’s going to be weird not listening after I finish these shows.
I Dream of Cameras podcast - The hosts are great and as into cameras as I am.
Projects
Working on some real estate ventures to ensure my family is taken care of for the long haul.
Formulating some personal artistic projects I want to explore now that I’ve stepped away from the day-to-day operations of my company.
